A RAUNCHY P FUNKY HEAD TRIP with special guest Mr. George Clinton
A Kinda "What If Type Thang" from the "420 Funk Mob" and DRUGS!!!
July 19, 2007 10:10 AM PDT
The Very First Podcast from the Wefunk Live Archives contains a series of firsts. The very first song DRUGS played on stage. Tracks from the very first performance of the 420 Funk Mob at Tramps in '97 and Spain in 2004. The first DRUGS show at the Knitting Factory, and the first mix from the first 24 track recording of 420FM Live. These can be considered the shows where the 420 Funk Mob and DRUGS crews earned their BONES and became Made Members of what is know known as the Wefunk Mob
This Podcast starts off with the very first DRUGS show on August 8th 2001, It features the original DRUGS line up Clip Payne, Chicken Burke on Drums, Adam Widoff, Joe Eppard, Mike "Boomer" Birnbaum, Paul Wilkins on guitars and a friend of Chicken's Lonnie Hillyar on Bass,
The band was originally going to play their first gig at the original Woodstock site at Yasgur's Farm but a torrential rainstorm turned the venue into a mud pit and we were told not to show up, so instead we set up a show for Midnight at the Joyous Lake. It was a Sunday night and the band who was playing wanted to be done by 11 cause they had a long drive back to Boston, We made fliers and passed them around at the annual Reggae Festival that was going on in town that afternoon, that said
Can You Pass the Acid Test?
DRUGS
at Midnight
Joyous Lake
Woodstock NY
By 11pm there were 200 people gathered on the porch of the Lake waiting for this band from Boston and the 15 people in the club waiting for them to leave. The Band saw the crowd that had gathered, so they kept on playing. When Midnight hit they were still onstage in the middle of song and we were standing at the front of the stage with all our gear.
Mike Birnbaum looked at his watch, finished his drink and said, "it's midnight we're supposed to be on stage." He picked up his amp walked right up on stage and put it next to the other bands guitar player and plugged up. The guys in the other band were looking around perplexed. I followed next with Clips ASRX-PRO and set it upfront (center stage). We were followed by Adam, Joey, and Paul.
Now there was two bands on stage. The DJ from their band grabbed a mic and starts Free Stylin, Clip and G Pace grab the other mics on stage and start battlin with the DJ while both bands start playing off each other. This went on for another 10 minutes until we took over the house bass and drum kit and literally pushed the other band off stage. This was our home town after all. After Jaming a bit the band took a break. The Opener was the first song "soundcheck" and became the first DRUGS track ever played live.
Trash A Go Go is from the very first 420 Funk Mob show at Tramps in 1997. It features the Billy Bass Nelson and Lige Curry Dual Bass thing, Gabe Gonzalez on drums, Mike Hampton on Guitar, Greg Fitz and Stozo on Keyboards and Clip on lead vocals. This was from the bands second set that night. Tickets for Cameo werent selling and when we approached TRAMPS management about a show they offered us the opening slot for what we wanted to headline so it was a no brainer. The day the advertisments hit the news stand announcing the addition of 420FM to the Line up the show sold out.
Freedom Came was still being written and this is the first live performance from the first show at the Knitting Factory in New York in 2001, by this point the band had changed and Stephanie McKay from Mos Def was added as a singer, along with Garry Shider and Lige Curry from Pfunk. The guitar duties were being handled by Adam Widoff, Joe Eppard, Garry Shider. This was an early show with Jeremy Bernstein making an appearance on guitars as well. Chiken Burke is on drums.
Red Hot Mama 2004 is from the Alive in Spain 3 cd set. 420FM made their European debut headling the first night of the Chill'n Drone Festival in Zaragoza Spain. Clip lead a band that featured Garry Shider, Jeremy Bernstein and Ted Orr on guitars, Zach Alford and Gabe Gonzalez on drums, Lili Haydn on violin, Lige Curry on Bass, the Wefunk Horns Shane Kirsch and Dean Jones, Danny Bedrosian and Peter Keys on Keyboards. Kendra Foster, The LAW, and Avalon on backing vocals. George Clinton was our special guest. The show was simulcast on TV and Radio as part of the 25th anniversary of Spanish Radio 3. We hit the stage of the Zaragoza Symphony Hall at 1:20 am and had the crowd of 21-25 years olds up on their feet dancing until 420am.
The final two selections are from the upcoming 420FM Live album tentatively titled "LIVE IN WOODSTOCK" from the 420 Funk Mob's APRIL 14th sold out BEARSVILLE THEATER performance. The band featured a combination of 420FM and DRUGS members for the first hometown gig in over three years. Clip Payne,Ted Orr,The LAW Adam Widoff, Jeremy Bernstein,Garry Shider and Joe Eppard were joined by Chris Gartman (3), Alana Orr (Van Hunt), Ross Rice, and the Herbal Nation horns who all made their first appearance with the Funk Mob
Makes Me Scared has never been previously released. The song has never been actually recorded in the studio, only the basic track, but has been in the DRUGS Live show for the past few years. This was the first time it was performed by 420fm, Brain on DRUGS closes out the set.
